Wall Tiles – Decorative Entrance

One of the most common wall tiles is ceramic. Ceramic tiles have been made by man over 4,000 years ago. They have been found in the pyramids, the ruins of Babylon, and ancient Greek cities. They displayed beautiful sculptures of that period of time.

Ceramic tile is made from a mixture of clays that are fired on high temperatures and then are generally glazed. They are used to add beautiful accents to your walls and your surroundings.

Wall tiles are more durable then any other wall covering. They are easy to clean, stain resistant to most acids, not effected by oxygen and easy to maintain. You can put wall tiles in any room that you need easily maintainable surfaces. They help create a sense of   freshness and tranquility.

They are available in a wide range of design, color, materials and patterns. Some of the materials are ceramic, porcelain, limestone, metal, slate, marble, granite, cork and glass. There are many sizes, shapes and decorative techniques that are used for you’re choosing.

Before purchasing the tiles you must measure and make certain you buy enough for your surface. Proper preparation makes it easy to install yourself. There are many professionals that can install the wall tiles if the “do it yourself “ does not work for you.

You must make sure you have everything at hand before you start the project. This job does require special tools. For instance you will need a saw, tile cutters, nippers, trowels, spreaders, rubber float, and a leveling board. Professionals also apply tiles to walls using a thick bed of mortar.

Since your wall tiles won’t be walked on you can use ceramic or rustic stone. There is also available recycled glass which comes in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. This is for the environmentally minded individual.  Also in this same category you can purchase metal tiles in panels which is lighter. This material can also be hand painted or antiqued to match your decor, but please keep in mind that metal can be harder to install.

Anywhere you would like beautiful art on walls you can put up tile murals. They are especially attractive as a back splash in your kitchen above your counter or stove top. It can make any room in your home unique, special, and very comfortable.

Decorative techniques are used on tiles. Some examples are unglazed which the color can range from light sand to brick red. There are also plain glazes such as flint, white lead, china stone and china clay. These are all ground to make the glazes. They add ground metal oxides to form different colors. Last but not least there are mosaic tiles. These come in a variety of color choices. Yellow, blue, brown, black, turquoise, green and white are the many colors they come in. They are carved and cut into small pieces and placed close together into a prepared pattern. They are plastered and hardened into one large single piece.

Some other techniques are hand painted, carved, tube lining, modeled, and transfer printing.

Porcelain tile is very popular material used in today’s homes. It is a newer form of ceramic tile. It is composed of fine porcelain clay that is fired at higher temperatures then ceramic. It is denser, less porous, and prone to take in less moisture and more stain resistant. .The downside is that it is harder to cut then ceramic. Porcelain is suitable for the indoors as well as outdoors.

Marble is more high maintenance and very porous. It needs to be resealed every 1 to 2 years depending on where it is used. For instance in a shower area where there is heat and steam.

Granite wall tiles are stunning and dramatic but very heavy. These can be hard to install because gravity takes over. They must be securely attached but once hung correctly they are very durable.

Cork is another durable and stable material. It is a pure material and it improves indoor air quality. It is elegant and sophisticated and brings warmth to your living quarters.

They take the visual essence of natural light and infused it with a multitude of colors using glass tiles. This method can add pizzazz and charm to your decor.

There is a vast difference in price range for the many  different materials that are used in making wall tiles. You can find ceramic tiles priced between $1.00 and $5.00 per square foot. Depending on your style and budget glass tiles can be as high as $25.00 to $50.00 per square foot.

No matter what choice you finally make, wall tiles all produce the same effect. They inject color, interest and excitement to your life and home.

Ceramic Tile Vs Porcelain

Porcelain tiles are not very different from ceramic tiles. In fact, porcelain tiles are ceramic tiles which are modified in structure. It is therefore interesting to have the comparison of ceramic tile vs porcelain. The comparison reveals a lot which we can take as a worthy lesson.

The first major feature about porcelain tiles is that they do not absorb water at a high rate. Their quality of reduced water absorption makes them very suitable for certain tasks. They are ideal for covering walls and flooring. For the obvious reason, ceramic tiles would not work as well as their porcelain counterparts.

There are various things to consider when choosing a suitable tile material. You want to know that the material is durable so that it can handle all the challenges you meet. The hardness of the material will mainly come up in ceramic tile vs porcelain. It is therefore vital to know what kind of materials make the tiles.

The main material that makes both ceramic and porcelain tiles is clay. There is also a combination of quartz, sand and other ferrous materials. Another vital similarity is the fact that they are both burned at very high temperatures. Because the clay in porcelain tiles is highly purified and much finer, they are more resistant to shocks and impact.

With this fact in mind when faced with the option ceramic tile vs porcelain, you are better informed. Ceramic tiles will usually go well with murals and porcelain goes best where resistance to elements is required like on floors.

Experts constantly throw their weight on the fact that porcelain is suitable for harsh occasions. On the topic of ceramic tile vs porcelain, the former will not be able to withstand this harsh conditions. I’m talking about coverings for outdoor areas where weather changes and temperature variations may erode the weaker material.

Also consider cooler climates where porcelain remains firm and cracks cannot easily occur. Still on ceramic tile vs porcelain, you must consider the price. It is not surprising to know that porcelain tiles are more expensive than ceramic ones. The two kinds of tiles are vital and it depends on what you prefer.

Ceramic tiles are very slippery and this is due to the fact that they are glazed. This makes them the best match for mural applications. Due to their fragile nature, ceramic tiles are more prone to cracking. This in turn creates a great need for them to be protected and handled with at most care.

When faced with the choice of ceramic tile vs porcelain, you must consider whether they are scratch resistant. You will find porcelain made from white clay. You might also find it in red and brown varieties as well. Therefore, make a choice that will all depend on your need and preference.

This information will only guide you to know some vital facts about tiles. The materials are available everywhere and you can get to see the kind of products produced by tiles. You will enjoy them and you will surely get inspired.

Metal Tile Systems new generation of Roofing materials

Have you ever wanted to build a roof that is strong and easy to install but lokks like a house roof rather then an industrial shed?

Have a look at the Metal tiles – the new generation of roofing materials. Made of high quality roofing steel, they are zinc coated, painted and polyester coated on the top for the better protection. They are strong, light weight, weather resistant, water-proof. But the most important thing is thta they look so much like spanish clay tiles, you may be surprised to learn it’s made of the strongest steel.

It surely is the best solution for any project big or small – any home addition or extension, carports, garages, patios, pergolas, gazebos, relocatable buildings, or re-roofing where you need to keep the “tilish” look of your house.

The weight of the steel tiles is around 3.5 – 4 Kg per 1 square meter which makes them one of the lightest roofing materials. Comparing with the concrete tiles (around 40 Kg per 1 square meter) there is a good chance that you could save a lot of money on the frame work. Because the tile sheets a so light in weight you can allow less roof trusses (rafters) to support the roof. Zinc coating class AZ150 is making the roofing sheets rust-proof. The coating is typically covers the steel inside as well as outside.

The installation of the tin tiles is very similar to any other sheet metal roofing like corrugated iron. The battens spacings are 350 mm and that makes the steel tiles strong and easy to install. The tile sheets are appropriate for all kinds of roofs with inclination from 6 deg. That makes them a perfect solution for the projects with a low pitched roof.

The iron tiles are a fantastic product for any project big or small, new houses or re-roofing, any house additions and extensions, carports and pergolas, patios and gazebos.

Kitchen Floor Tiles – Fashionable Tiles

The kitchen is most obviously home to food preparation and consumption; however this common analogy, in recent times is changing. The kitchen of today is in many cases the core of a home, leaving the bedroom and living room obsolete. These “modern” kitchens have many social notions that enable it to be attractive, trendy and most importantly fashionable in today’s society.  In many cases the use of impressive lighting and contemporary colours and style such as granite work tops give off these cutting edge styles, furthermore on many occasions, more recently to say, there has been an increase in kitchen TV’s; adding a whole new dimension to the way we once though a kitchens were. This article in particular will focus on the impact of kitchen floor tiles in these modern day kitchens. The impact these tiles present is on a highly significant scale, which will be discussed in the article.

Kitchen floor tiles have to be “fashionable tiles” this is what gives off that wow factor. The contrast the tiles will have with the walls, work-surfaces, ceilings, lighting and more recently televisions. Kitchens of today can be looked at like a piece of art work, where there is a strong sense of matching and cohesion between all the different pieces of the kitchen which bind together to form the finished puzzle of perfection.

Kitchen floor tiles are very hard and sturdy tiles, yet offer that impressive wow factor that ultimately separates each kitchen from another. The tiles that are normally used in the kitchen vary greatly on the style of one’s kitchen. More and more recently the fashionable kitchen floor tiles are of a darker array because they are perfect for hiding dirt and grime, which shows up instantly when one installs white or lighter tiles. Royal Travertine tiles are perfect for the kitchen floor as these tiles are incredibly strong and versatile and you know they will last many decades. On one particular website I have found this kitchen floor tile to be half price. This is an extremely good offer as it means that you are saving money and purchasing a tile that is extremely strong and will last.

Furthermore on many more recent occasions there is the idea of opposites attract. New contemporary designs have kitchen floor tiles that contrast the colours of the walls. For example the floor tiles are often of a dark colour whilst the walls and work surfaces are of a lighter colour. This automatically creates a striking difference between the floor tiles and the wall tiles. By being different creates striking comparison of colours.

From this short article it is possible to see that kitchen floor tiles are a very important element when one considers the designs of a kitchen. By using good quality tiles such as travertine kitchen tiles you are sure to benefit from their sturdy long life and brilliant designs.

Wall Tiles – Different Styles

Today there is a huge choice of wall tiles for the home improver or mover.  In fact the choice has never been so great in size, colour and materials .  There are now many more retailers in the market offering products from the very cheap to the bespoke designer tile.

Wall tiles are no longer just for bathrooms and kitchens.  The fact that we now travel more and appreciate the styles and culture of Mediterranean properties means that many people will now choose to tile other rooms in their homes.  Today’s modern homes also tend to have more bathrooms.  There are many more opportunities for using tiling, such as conservatories and feature walls in rooms.

There is now more choice in terms of the size and shape of wall tiles that you can buy.  From the very large to the small, mosaic effect tiles. You can also now buy motifs to stick onto them to give a 3-D effect. They come in different finishes too and some even with embedded lights or space for your CD covers.
Tiling walls is much easier today and can be achieved by an enthusiastic DIYer.  With many helpful products and advice on the market it need no longer be a specialist job.  To start with remember before tiling a wall you must ensure that it is free from any previously applied tile adhesive or wallpaper. If you intend using something like natural stone on the walls then you must be careful to take into account the weight. Removing old tiles can be a dangerous job. Broken tiles are extremely sharp and tiles can splinter when removing them so it is advisable to wear some goggles and Good quality gloves. If you are using a power drill to remove the tiles then a Dust mask will also be required.

Before you start to put up the tiles, fasten a horizontal batten on the wall and then fix one Vertically, use a spirit level to ensure that both battens are completely level, the Vertical batten should be positioned so that the first tile you position will be in the centre of the wall. Now spread a bed of adhesive using a notched spreader and cover an area of approximately 1 metre. Never Dab adhesive on each corner as this can cause the wall tiles to break.

Next  fix the tiles with a twisting motion, working outwards and upwards. Ensure that you wipe off any excess adhesive from the tiles and don’t forget to insert the tile spacers and hey presto your wall tiles are up.  Once you have fixed your tiles they will need grouting, this involves mixing a powdered grout with a liquid (normally water) and pushing it into all of the gaps between the tiles using a rubber bladed squeegee. Avoid ready mixed grouts as they are often too runny and are difficult to use.

If you are grouting in a shower or near anywhere that is likely to get wet you must use a waterproof grout. You can also get a special additive that you can add to grout to prevent it from going discoloured, this must be used when the tiles are used as a splash back over a cooking appliance. Coloured grouts are also available. If you are grouting any wall tiles that are porous such as Natural stone you must ensure that the grout will not stain the tiles, often a grout that is the same colour as the tiles will be used to prevent staining.

How to take care of your Travertine Tiles?

Travertine tiles are delicate stones that compliment all type of designs. The hardness factor of this stone is lower than marble or granite. It gets warred out after sometime but serves for long span, if you maintain them carefully. It is highly reactive against acidic cleaners or solvents. Avoid them and follow the given below tips and techniques for the care and maintenance of your tiles.

Travertine tiles require extreme care. So, seal them as soon as they are installed. If the natural stone is polished, then you can save on your sealing costs. A good quality sealant adds luster to your tiles and acts as a barrier between the tile and dirt or stains.

If you have installed the tiles in your kitchen or bathroom, then you can find spillage of fruit juices, vinegar, soda, toiletry products etc. Wipe these spills as soon as possible. This prevents etching and staining of the tile surface.

For regular cleaning regimes, prefer hot water cleaning. Spill hot water and blot the stains with a soft sponge. You can also use a cotton cloth to clean the tile surface. You can also use mild soap or detergent occasionally.

Always use coaters with glass, jars and cans. This prevents occurrence of glass rings on the travertine tiles. Keep the toiletries on a tray. This prevents spillage of toiletry chemicals on the surface.

Prefer tumbled or honed travertine tiles. They don’t look dirty when some dirt or dust gets deposited on the tile surface. You can clean its surface with a duster or vacuum cleaner.

Always use doormats in your homes. This prevents the entrance of dust particles inside the room.

Take the following precaution in your everyday activities so that you can maintain the life of your tiles. So, install travertine tiles in your homes without getting worried about their maintenance issues.

Home Design Outlet Center Offers White Carrara Marble Collection

HomeDesignOutletCenter has been known to offer high quality bathroom vanities and building materials at affordable prices. The Company offers many different types of products. Besides vanities, the wide range of products include faucets, natural stone tiles, mosaics, glass sinks, mouldings, medallions, shower systems and whirlpools/jetted tubs.

The range of products is meant to provide flexible solutions for homeowners. When building or renovating a bathroom, there are two challenges that contractors and homeowners must overcome. The first challenge is to find a suitable bathroom vanity. The second challenge is to source for compatible bathroom tiles that will match the vanity. Very often, the bathroom design is compromised because homeowners cannot locate the right materials.

For example, many modern bathroom vanities have a simple and classic looking design. The vanity top is almost always white in color. The next step is to pick a tile with a color that matches the white vanity top. However, most of the tile colors are not white in color. Colors may be grey, beige, or golden brown. For some, such colors are nice to have because they create a sharp contrast between the vanity and the floor tiles. But there are some homeowners who prefer everything to be completely white.

Understanding that different homeowners have different preferences, the Company has decided to import a complete collection of white carrara marble. The white carrara marble collection is a rare collection that consists of tiles, mosaics, and mouldings.

This means that if a homeowner chooses to have white as the primary color, the entire bathroom can be constructed with the new white carrara marble collection. Homeowners do not have to compromise on the design just because matching colors are not available. The situation of having beige for the tile color, grey for moulding and white for the vanity top can now be avoided.

“The availability of white carrara marble is rare,” a spokes person from the Company commented. “This is due to the fact that pure white marble cannot be imported easily from any country as the material is mined only in Italy.”

Pure white marble is created by a process that is known as metamorphism. Such marble can only be created by very pure limestone. The surface of the marble is completely white. But like all other marble types, one can expect the interior to contain swirling patterns. Such patterns are subtle and add to the elegant appearance of the building material. The swirling patterns are created by minerals such as clay or sand that is trapped inside the marble.

Besides mouldings, the Company is proud to announce that it now has stock for mosaics and tiles that are of different sizes. Having the material available as both mosaic and tile is great news for homeowners and contractors. Bathrooms that are of all shapes and sizes can now be fitted with the new white carrara marble with minimum hassle.
