Dr. Bonnie Explains how People can Learn from Whitney Houston’s Addictions

This weekend, Oprah is set to interview the brother and sister-in-law of Whitney Houston. One of the things that stands out about their commentary on the late singer is that they seemed to know it would only be a matter of time before drug addiction took her life. “It’s so sad we lost a good soul,” sympathizes Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil, “and how many other good souls have we lost to drugs?”

Dr. Bonnie explains this with the biochemical craving for connection which occurs any time someone struggles with stress, loss, or separation.” People often turn to substances like alcohol, drugs, adultery, financial infidelity -any kind of addiction that will calm them, self medicate, and be a stress buster when they’re anxious, scared, have any kind of fear.

Stress makes people feel “down” and when people seek a way to calm the body down from stress, or to fill the emptiness left by loss they begin self-medicating. “They turn to thrill-seeking behavior,” explains Dr. Bonnie, “to fill that emptiness, to get their dopamine and seratonin levels balanced. The key is to address the emptiness – everyone has it, but you don’t have to fill it in with drugs, alcohol, or other types of addiction.”

When people feel empty, they seek a high to get their dopamine levels up – this is the hormone that makes people feel alive and people search for anything to get them balanced. This is why, when treating addicted patients, Dr. Bonnie works with a medical doctor to help balance out the levels of dopamine and seratonin through a combination of diet, exercise, supplements, medication (if necessary), and meditation as well as therapy.

Once someone is addicted, it’s extremely difficult to get that person to even seek treatment because they succumb to what Dr. Bonnie calls “magical thinking” – “They won’t admit they have a problem,” explains Dr. Bonnie. “They think everything’s fine.” Dr Bonnie explains this is why everyone close to Whitney Houston suspected she would eventually fall prey to her addictions since she didn’t admit it herself.

“I want to get the message out there,” says Dr. Bonnie,” that if people have loved ones with these problems don’t wait till they listen – you have to be the guardian of connection for that person because they won’t think anything’s wrong.

If you’re a family member, partner, or friend, make sure you take action with the person who is having the addiction, like Whitney. Set boundaries, even if they are mad at you – which they probably will be if you try to intervene and help them. You need to lead them down the path even if they protest.

It doesn’t matter your race, creed, or how poor or rich you are – whether you’re Whitney Houston, a Congress person (who have been having some of their own problems!), or a regular person – the Biochemical craving for connection affects everyone.
